Early this spring, this column contained some desperate and concerning news about the Herald’s future. Though there’s plenty of work still to be done to cement this newspaper’s continued survival, this year has been made much easier than last, thanks in no small part to financial gifts and support in myriad other ways from scores of our readers.

With that in mind, we’d like to party with all of you this fall.

As astute readers will have noticed, we’re marking the Herald’s 150th anniversary this year. We’re planning to hold an anniversary party to celebrate 15 decades of faithfully serving the communities in the White River Valley. That party is scheduled for the evening of Saturday, Nov. 16.

The ticketed event will include food and drink, musical performances, on-site printing of commemorative posters, and live retrospectives featuring some of The Herald’s celebrated coverage of newsworthy events, both recent and long-passed.

We’ll aim to emphasize the paper’s important role in connecting the small towns in Central Vermont through stories about individual and community achievements and authentic reporting on people’s concerns. The night’s program will also include a peek into the 2025 plans for visionary growth and fundraising to ensure a healthy financial future for this essential local resource.

It should be a fun time with plenty of merriment.

A Little Help From Our Friends

Besides financial contributions, The Herald has also received volunteer help from a bunch of community members, who have stepped forward to lend a hand.

They’ve formed several committees to help chart a path forward for The Herald and they have been working hard on the big bash to celebrate our communities and The Herald’s century-and-a-half of coverage.

At this event, amidst all the merriment, we hope to share some of the work that everyone has poured into the paper this year. Learn about our ongoing efforts to preserve The Herald for future generations, to make our archives better and more accessible, and to keep telling the story of our quirky and wonderful part of the world.

Mark your calendars and buy your tickets now—November 16 will be here before you know it.
